For many people, heart rate monitors are one of the most useful training accessories you can buy.
Heart rate monitors give you the opportunity to know at all times how hard you are training. This is crucial for three reasons:
- Many people over train: Overtraining means that you spend most of your training at high heart rates. While this might sound good - you are working hard, right? - in fact it is ultimately destructive. Too much time at high heart rates - in the red zone - will lead to injury and breakdown.
- Many people undertrain: Conversely, there are a lot of people who don't like to push themselves. As a result they go so slowly that they never make any progress.
- Finding your training zone: Once you understand how to use a heart rate monitor, you can plan your training. That means you can spend the correct amount of time at easy, medium, and hard efforts.
Choosing a heart rate monitor will depend on your budget and your attitude towards technology. Prices start as low as ?30, for which you get a basic model that tells you your current heart rate, elapsed workout time, and, when you're done, your average heart rate.
If budget is no object, then you can get a top end model that will allow you to download all your workout data to your PC.
