The use of barbells is as old as weight training itself, and although there are now many high tech weight machines on the market, for many it is still the only real way to work out.
Barbells and discs make a great addition to a home gym. With just a few you can perform a huge range of different exercises, usually in a fairly limited amount of space.
If you are looking at buying barbells for home use, it's worth checking out the different options available. In general, this is an area where you get what you pay for.
At the bottom end of the market you can get some very cheap sets - the bar will be quite thin, which can be a little uncomfortable on the hands, and the discs will be plastic, filled with sand. Having said that, many people have got mighty strong using basic equipment like this.
At the next price point you'll find more comfortable bars - chrome plated probably - and metal weights. These have a more substantial, solid feel to them, although if they're going to be used somewhere damp like a garage, you need to think about rust.
At the top and are some high quality items. These will include really heavy-weight bars, and rubber covered metal plates.
