Life Fitness December 2010

It's December, and that means that if you are considering buying some home exercise equipment, it's the last chance to buy at 2010 prices. This is particularly important with the VAT rate scheduled to rise from 17.5% to 20% in January - on a high end piece of equipment like a treadmill, that could mean paying fifty to one hundred pounds more after Christmas than before.

Taking advantage of the last chance to buy at 2010 prices also means that you can benefit from the pre-Christmas sales. While many people focus on the traditional January sales, there are plenty of bargains to be found by the savvy shopper as retailers look to boost their pre-Christmas sales.

Home exercise equipment is a wise investment for most people - buying equipment like treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, or multigyms has many benefits over going to the gym:

Return on investment:
Gym fees seem to get higher every year, with many people paying fifty to a hundred pounds every month. Over the course of two years that's up to ?2500! For ?2500 you can buy a lot of home workout equipment, and it will last you for many years. In addition, there will be no travel costs, and no temptation to spend money at the caf? or bar afterwards.

Convenience:
Investing in home gym equipment is all about convenience. Not only will there be no travel time when you want to work out, but your own home gym will always be open, whether you are a lark or a night owl. And of course, you'll never have to wait for a piece of equipment to be free (unless you other half gets there before you!)

Variety:
While it's worth buying quality equipment - it will work better and last longer - there's no reason why you can't also have some variety. Even if you invest most of your money in one piece of home workout equipment - say a treadmill or an elliptical - you can still add variety by adding some smaller, less expensive pieces of equipment. You can do a lot with a few dumbbells, an exercise ball, some workout DVDs and a skipping rope.

Privacy:
Another issue that many people appreciate about working out at home is privacy. Gyms can be intimidating places, with the feeling that everyone is watching you. At home, there's no one else around, no one watching you workout out.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that if you have some quality workout equipment at home, it doesn't mean you have to stop going to the gym. You can complement your home workouts with occasional visits to the gym, some swimming, or walks and runs. Looks like it's time to start shopping!
