Have you ever wondered how to use a rowing machine? This is a great piece of equipment, considered pound for pound to offer one of the best all around workouts you can get - but if you are not sure how to use a rowing machine, it can be a little intimidating.
As with anything, those who do it well make it look easy, but for the beginner, learning how to use a rowing machine is rarely as difficult as it looks. The simplest approach is just to ask someone who works at the gym or club to help you.
They will not only demonstrate it, they will also get you started and make sure you are doing it right. You may be a little embarrassed to ask, but remember, everyone who uses this equipment was a beginner at one time or another, and many of them needed help to get started.
In reality, if you simply sit on the machine you'll quickly get a feel for it. So what do you do?
- Put your feet into the foot pedals and secure the strap
- If the machine has a resistance setting, set it to a low level to start
- Slide forward so that your knees are bent and grasp the handle with an overhand grip. This is the starting position.
- With your arms straight, and keeping your head up, drive back with your legs
- As your legs straighten, pull the handle in towards the bottom of you ribs
- Straighten your arms, and using your leg muscles bend the knees to return to the starting position
That's it - you've done one stroke! As you repeat this motion you will quickly find a natural rhythm. Keep it relaxed, don't strain, and you'll get a great workout.
