Get Fit with the Bosu Balance Trainer

The Bosu balance trainer is one of the most interesting pieces of equipment in the gym, but many people aren't sure how to use it. However, once you understand this ingenious piece of workout equipment, you will want to include it in your workouts on a regular basis.

The Bosu balance trainer is named because of the way it works - BOSU stands for "both sides up". In appearance it has half a ball on one side, and a platform on the other, which makes it a great way to work on your balance and your flexibility.

Trainers incorporate Bosu balance trainers into workouts because they work the body in an interesting variety of ways. Used regularly they can help to:

  • Improve your balance and coordination
  • Improve your posture
  • Increase your strength and muscular endurance

Unlike many pieces of equipment, you can use them as part of your strength workout, or as part of your cardiovascular training. And like all pieces of stability equipment, they are a great way of working your abs.

Why are they so effective? Because of the constant need to maintain balance - this forces you to adjust to the ever-changing instability of the surface, creating the perfect triangle of fitness by working your flexibility, strength and cardio.

As a result, the BOSU has become one of the hottest pieces of fitness equipment of the past few years, able to challenge everyone, from unfit beginners through to highly conditioned and advanced athletes.

You can perform numerous exercises on the BOSU either with the inflated side up, or flipped over so you can work on the solid platform. Whichever side you use, you can perform a wide variety of exercises. These include:

  • One or two footed balance stances
  • Core exercise for the abs lower back
  • Push-ups
  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Numerous barbell and dumbbell exercises
  • Other stability exercises

The platform itself is 25 inches in diameter, and if you are interested in purchasing one for home use, you'll find the package includes not only the balance board, but also the pump, valve plug, and a Total Body Workout DVD.

They are a great addition to a home gym, allowing you to add a great deal of variety to your workouts without taking up a lot of space.

Why not try it out next time you are at your local gym? You'll quickly discover that this is one of the best balance and core training devices ever created.
