There are two main type of boxing tips. The first are those that directly relate to the actual skills you need in the ring, and those that relate to fitness.
Fitness related boxing tips are crucial because, like any other sport, if you are not in good shape, you can't execute the skills when you need them. Thus fitness related boxing tips allow you to utilize your skills when you need them - in the ring.
This is an incredibly demanding sport, requiring a range of fitness skills including:
- Speed
- Strength
- Stamina
- Agility
- Flexibility
- Balance
- Power
Harnessing all of these is what makes it so popular these days as a form of exercise, even for those who have no intention of ever stepping into the ring.
So what can you learn from boxing workouts that can help you improve your fitness? Perhaps the most powerful learning for many people when they start training like this is the power of HIIT! That's not HIT, as in getting punched, but HIIT - an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training.
The idea behind HIIT is simple. You first warm up for 5 minutes, keeping your heart rate steady. Once you are warmed up, you perform a series of high intensity intervals - this is where you blast your heart rate up to at least 80% to 85% of your max.
You can do this on any type of cardio machine (treadmill, bike, rower, etc), or on a heavy bag. Once you are into your high heart rate zone, you work at that level for 1 to 4 minutes - this is called an interval, and helps to explain the name High Intensity Interval Training.
By the end of the interval you should be very tired - you slow back down to your warm up speed for 1 to 2 minutes, then repeat the interval. Repeat this pattern for a total of twenty minutes, then cool down.
This type of training will burn a lot of calories in a short period of time, crank your metabolism up, and improve your overall fitness.
