Core Training Secrets

There are a few core training secrets that will make your workouts more effective. The truth is that most people waste a lot of time doing ineffective exercises - using these core training secrets will ensure that your time in the gym is helping you achieve your goals.

So what are the most important core training secrets? There are five that will really help you:

  • The fat must go: Many people want a trim, flat mid-section, but to achieve that six pack look there is one thing you have to do - get rid of the fat. This comes not from doing 1000 sit-ups per day, but from a sensible program of diet and exercise that gradually strips the fat away to reveal the muscle underneath.

  • Work the angles: There's more the core than just the abs. To build a strong core you need to work the front (abs), the side (with twisting movements) and the back (low back). The more variety you include, the stronger your core will be.

  • Upper or lower abs? People often talk about working their upper or lower abs - it really doesn't make much difference. The abs are like an elastic band - you can stretch it (work it) from either end. As stated above, the key is variety.

  • Equipment: There are various pieces of equipment for working this area. The best (most effective) is an exercise ball, while the worst is the beloved abs cradle.

  • Dynamic versus static: Your mid-section performs both static and dynamic work, so you have to include both in your workout. That means doing movements like crunches, but also static planks.

Working this area on a regular basis is essential for a strong, healthy body.
