If you are looking for a good home workout, used exercise bikes are a great way to get a lot of bang for your buck. While buying anything second hand has its risk, because they have fewer moving parts than other machines, used exercise bikes are very reliable. It thus makes a lot of sense to look at second hand models.
When you start shopping for used exercise bikes, there are a number of issues you need to consider. Firstly, you need to decide whether you want an upright or recumbent machine. The difference comes down to comfort, space and budget - recumbent models are usually more comfortable, but they take up more space and are more expensive.
However, whatever type of machine you consider, your primary considerations should be:
- Size: Measure the space you have available, and make sure that anything you consider fits comfortably. If you can barely move around your room because of the machine, you'll soon get fed up with it.
- Price: Because many people buy exercise equipment in a rush of enthusiasm, then quit, there are always lots of choices, at lots of prices. You can pick up a basic model for as little as ?20 through your local paper, or pay up to ?2000 for the top of the line programmable models that you might see at the gym - the key is to know what they cost new, and how much use they have had.
- Options: Basic machines will have little more than a speedo and a manual tension control. Expensive models will have full digital readouts with heart rate control and dozens of programmes. What do you want and how much do you want to pay? The choice is yours!
