The wide availability of Pre and post natal DVDs is a real boon to pregnant women. Pre and post natal DVDs are a great way to learn what exercises are safe and recommended for you both while you are pregnant, and also afterwards.
Pre and post natal DVDs cover key areas such as what exercises you can do while you are pregnant and which to avoid, how long you can exercise, and also areas such as nutrition.
After you have given birth you will want to know when it is safe to exercise again, and again what exercises you can and can't do.
For pregnant women, the key areas to be aware of when exercising are:
- Avoid excessive bouncing
- Don't get too hot
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid exercises on your back, especially after 16 weeks, as the weight of the baby on the aorta (a big blood vessel) can make you feel faint.
After you have given birth, you can return to gentle exercise, such as walking, almost straight away. You'll need to wait a little longer before you exercise vigorously, but you should start exercising your pelvic floor as soon as possible.
