Once upon a time, pedometers were an expensive item, not the sort of thing you'd find given away in a cereal box - how times have changed!
These days basic pedometers cost just a few pounds, and can be used by anyone to keep up with their walking or running mileage.
Of course, as entry level pedometers have come down in price, higher ticket items have appeared on the market. Here's what they can offer:
Pocket pedometers: Whereas the old models had to be worn on your waistband - if they weren't upright they wouldn't read properly - newer models can tolerate being carried at an angle of up to 30 degrees from vertical.
You can therefore carry them in a pocket, tuck them in your sock, or even wear them on a lanyard around your neck. Features on these newer models include options like:
- Number of steps
- Distance - more meaningful to most of us than total steps
- Calories burned
- Calculating speed
- Taking your pulse
- Working as a timer
- Speaking the data to you
Alternatively, there are also shoe models that will also measure the life of your shoe! That way you know when to replace your shoes.
