A heart rate monitor is a valuable fitness tool, allowing you to always know exactly how hard you are working.
Fitness is a balancing act at all times. To improve your fitness you have to push yourself - but if you push too hard, too often, you break down and get injured.
You can use a heart rate monitor to improve your fitness, no matter what type of workouts you do. While the traditional uses are for endurance sports such as running, biking, or swimming, heart rate monitors can also tell you a lot about your gym workouts.
There are all sorts of variables to play with when you are working out in the gym, but one of the most important is intensity. Intensity is a concept that people understand in principle but how do you measure it? A heart rate monitor is a great way to do so.
Let's take an example. You are in the gym lifting weights - check your heart rate monitor. You'll find that when you lift, your heart rate rises, when you rest it drops - so far so good.
Now play with it a bit. If you usually rest one minute between sets try 30 seconds - or 20 seconds - even 10 seconds! Now look at what happens to your heart rate - it goes higher with each successive set! Congratulations! You're getting fitter!
