There are lots of weight benches on the market, but how do you choose the right one?
A quick look will reveal that weight benches come in a range of sizes, specifications, and prices. However, a good quality weights bench will give you years of comfortable, safe, effective workouts, so this is not the place to skimp on price.
The first consideration is weight itself - you need to calculate the total weight that your bench might have to bear. Typically that will be the weight of the heaviest person who will use the bench, plus their maximum likely bench press.
So if you weigh 100k, and can bench 120k, to be on the safe side you need a bench that is rated for at least 250k. Cheaper benches will just not be able to handle that kind of weight - or not for long, anyway!
Padding is also crucial. If you've ever done bench press on a cheap bench you'll be familiar with the feel of a bench digging into your back, and the neat lines of bruises you have on your back the next day!
Finally, consider the add-ons - do you want to add squat racks, leg extensions, etc? If so, be sure to choose a model that allows these to be fitted.
