What are amino acids? Amino acids are contained in protein, and are the building block of many of the structures in our body, including muscles, tendons, and bones.
The reason you hear so much about amino acids is because of the role they play in sports nutrition. There are twenty amino acids in total, and of these the body can make 12 - the other 8 we have to get from our diet, and these are termed Essential Amino Acids.
While these are all natural substances found in protein, some of them can boost sports performance when we supplement with them. Some of the most popular ones include:
Creatine: The ultimate muscle building supplement.
Arginine: Increases vascularity and pump
Glutamine: Essential for recovery, repair, and growth
L-Leucine: Improves growth and recovery of muscles, increases hormone production, and preserves muscle glycogen.
L-Isoleucine: Needed for muscle metabolism, tissue repair, and the maintenance of a proper nitrogen balance in the body
L-Valine: Important for stimulating anabolic function in humans
Beta Alanine: Essential for the production of Carnosine, a buffering agent that increases the time to muscular failure.
