The most popular performance supplement on the market, creatine has earned a deserved reputation for helping athletes train harder and longer, and add muscle mass.
Creatine is an amino acid - amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and as such this is a substance that the body both manufactures and uses. That means that creatine has no adverse side effects, and is well received by the body.
Creatine appears to work by slowing the production of lactic acid. Lactic acid is the body's waste product, and when we work out hard, we produce lots of it. As it accumulates it fatigues us, eventually overwhelming the muscle and causing the extreme burning we get when we've reached our limit.
However, if you are using this supplement, it will slow the production of lactic acid, meaning you can work out harder and longer - and those few extra reps that you squeeze out when you are already fatigued are the ones that really help you grow stronger and bigger.
There are various forms on the market, mostly powders, which can be taken either before or after a workout to boost performance.
