Yoga Mats

If you want to practice this wonderful activity, a good yoga mat is essential. Whether you are working at home by yourself, or in a class, the extra comfort and security you'll get will more than justify the small outlay.

The alternative to a yoga mat is of course the good old towel or folded blanket - the problem with these is that not only do they not provide the correct amount of padding, they tend to slide around. This can be embarrassing, or worse still, dangerous.

Good quality yoga mats, on the other hand, not only provide the correct amount of cushioning, they also won't slide around as you change positions, and roll up for easily storage at the end of your workout.

They are available in a variety of thicknesses, colours and materials. Consider the following when shopping:

  • Comfort and safety: This is crucial - choose a comfortable, non-slip surface that is big enough for you to move around without slipping onto the floor.

  • Thickness: This typically ranges from 1.5 to 6mm thick. Travel mats are the thinnest, offering little more than an anti-slip surface. Anything over 6mm will be unstable for balancing postures.
